Student Artwork & Show Opening

Early in 2010, I was contacted by Lance Taylor, a teacher from a high school located in an outer suburb of Perth, Western Australia. He had seen my artwork in Empty magazine and asked if I would be willing to be interviewed as a contemporary working artist by his senior art class as part of their research. Of course, I was excited to help.

As a result of the project, some of the students chose to create artwork inspired by my Clutter series, in which they portrayed themselves in their own environment, surrounded by their personal possessions. Below is one of those pieces, created by then-senior, Fraser Nightingale:

It is clear that a great deal of work was put into this beautifully-rendered art piece, and I thank Fraser for agreeing to let me post it. I especially love the shoe, helmet, and the striped bedsheets. And I'm always a sucker for electronics cords.

I am honored to have been interviewed by the class and ecstatic to have been inspiration for the students' art practice!

In other news, one of my new paintings will be in an art exhibition, "Art of Connection". All are welcome to attend the opening on Friday, December 9th, from 4:30-7pm.

The exhibition features the work of students graduating from the Masters of Art in Art Therapy program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), and/or the people they work with at their internship sites.

Additionally, for those of you who read this blog and also live in Germany (hundreds of you, no doubt), the album cover I submitted to the AMOS Showtime project will be shown alongside hundreds of others at the museum Beatlemania, located in Hamburg, from September 16th through December 31st. Address and contact information for the museum is located on Beatlemania's very German website, which I won't pretend to be able to read, despite my German genes and love for sauerkraut.

If you are unable to attend the show in Hamburg, all available album artwork (with Amos' album inside, of course) are available for your viewing pleasure and potential purchase at the AMOS Showtime Gallery web page. My particular piece is located here. My piece's price will also be reduced from 450 Euros to 279 Euros as soon as the website is updated within the next week or two (hooray!)

New Work

Here are a few pieces I've finished recently. In addition to my usual graphite/painting technique I've been working with oil on canvas for the first time in years and it has been pretty exciting.

You'll notice I left a blank on the title of the last painting, and that is because I forgot the name of one of the Barbies between the time I started the painting and now. I have emailed the 5-year-old who owns the Barbies for consultation, and hope to get the name of the second Barbie from the left within the next few days. I also am proud to say that, while the aforementioned 5-year-old came up with most of the Barbies' names, I named Cindy myself. Also, Cindy is a princess.

I have a few other paintings in the works so you can look forward to more updates soon. In the mean time I recommend you go play outside, because summer is awesome.

The new issue of Poets & Artists is available to view and buy online, and I am lucky enough to be featured on pages 16-19. The article includes some images of my work, as well as an interview. Most importantly, it features 100 pages of phenomenal figurative artists and artwork and poetry from talented writers.

As many of you know, I was recently named a finalist for the position of the 2011 Pfister Hotel Artist-in-Residence. Unfortunately for myself, I was not chosen this year. The honor went to Shelby Keefe. However, I want to thank everyone for their support and encouragement during the voting and selection process. I also want to thank the Pfister and InterContinental hotel for supporting the arts and for including me in the Finalists art show back in January-February. I will be sure to apply in the future. I WILL have private studio space one day, world!

First off, I want to thank everyone who was able to make my show opening at Gallerie M on Janaury 21st. I'm now going to eat roasted Chestnuts and watch movies to prepare myself for the epic snowstorm about to pound the midwest. For those of you in my area of the country, I recommend focusing not on how you'll have to dig your car out from 4 feet of wind-blown snow tomorrow, but on how awesome it will be to go sledding when work/school is inevitably canceled. My piece "5th of July" recently received a Bronze Award in the Gallery category from the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles (SILA). I am elated about the award.

The award exhibition, Illustration West 49, will be held at Gallery Nucleus, in Alhambra, CA. The opening reception will be on January 21st from 7-10PM. The exhibition is sure to be phenomenal, as it contains artwork from talented illustrators from around the country.

Gallery Night, Residence Opportunity, and New Work

Happy New Year everyone! My original resolution was to avoid getting a cold using nothing but vitamin C and sheer will, but I've already failed. My new resolution is to be a less serious board-game player, since I've gotten in 5 real-life fights with my brother in the last week while playing board games.

In other news, I have been selected as a finalist for the Artist in Residence position at the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee. Five Milwaukee-area artists and myself will be showing at Gallery M from January 21st through mid February, and each of us are hoping to be the 2011 Pfister Artist in Residence. While the final decision is made by a panel of judges, everyone has the ability to vote for his or her favorite artist.

I highly recommend voting for me. I am my favorite candidate for the position.

The opening reception will occur on Gallery Night, January 21st, from 5-9PM at Gallery M, located at the Intercontinental in Milwaukee. Come in, see some amazing art, and vote! In addition to art, there will be live music, appetizers, cocktails, and me in a dress, so come in and say hi!

Apparently there is going to be a live-feed twitter and text voting, which means that I will probably have to give in to creating a Twitter account. It also hopefully means people will be able to vote even if they can't make the event. I will definitely keep you updated on how to vote as I get more information.

Kinetic Playground Group Show

Tonight is a one-night group show at Kinetic Playground, presented by All Eyes on Art. It's going to be an awesome time, so if you're in the Chicago area, make sure to stop by! The bar is open and there will be art demonstrations, not to mention the fabulous art of 20 Chicago area artists. The evening will start out pretty quiet, but later into the night there will be a DJ and much dancing.

The show will be going from 7PM- 4AM, so stop in at any time tonight. Insomnia? Stop on by! Locked yourself out of your apartment at 1AM? We'll take you in!

Amos Showtime

Earlier this year I was asked to participate in the Amos Showtime project. Amos is a German musician/generally fascinating human being who is releasing a record this August. He and his team contacted 400+ international artists, sent them blank record sleeves, and asked them to design unique artwork inspired by the album. I submitted the following, being inspired largely by Amos' awesome hair:

Rest assured, that is how "Appartment" is meant to be spelled. I checked at least 12 times.

The artwork will be shown in galleries throughout Germany, Austria and Switzerland combined with the Amos concert tour in September. The work will be available to view and purchase- with Amos' record inside, of course- in an online gallery as well. I will update the blog with specific details as I get more information on dates. You can check out the Showtime blog at www.amos-showtime.com to see other submissions or go to Amos' facebook page to hear some of his rockin' jams. I recommend watching Amos' City Kill video if you enjoy gratuitous violence and standing on hoods of moving cars. I know I do.

In other news, I have officially moved to Chicago. So far I have no internet and no kitchen table, but other than getting shoved for walking too slow in the "L" station a few times, it's been going well. Hooray!

In older but equally excellent news, a few months ago I received a copy of Semi-Permanent 2010 edition. I have yet to see something from Design is Kinky that I don't absolutely love.

Just a small sampling of the over 200 images in the book.

Much to my delight, my 5th of July painting was featured in the book as well.

The Semi-Permanent book can be purchased from the Design is Kinky website. I don't know why I even just linked that, since it is clearly already bookmarked on your computer. Right? Riiiight?

In other news, I will be moving to Chicago in August, so I'm scrambling to get ready for the big move. However, it would be wrong of me not to acknowledge that I have neglected you, blog readers, and I promise to update you in the near future, even if it means I need to postpone my search for an affordable apartment that allows dogs and has parking space. DO YOU EXIST, FUTURE APARTMENT?

Names have been changed to protect the innocent. That is, until this painting reaches a gallery or publication. Because there's no protecting the victim on an official gallery label.

The piece is inspired in large part by the lifestyle and panache of my long-time friend, Andy Link. Slightly less importantly, the project also gave me an excuse to paint my favorite couch of all time, affectionately known by all as "The Rust Couch". He who sleeps on it is assured a night of vivid, magical dreams.

New Work: Age 24, Behind

Here, finally, are some paintings I finished in December.

This is a commission I did for my dear friend James. I was asked to paint a portrait of his father. Though there were many excellent sources to choose from, I was inspired by mid-twenties Mr. Ewart's general style and taste in sweaters. I painted father and son together, at similar ages.

I've also finished a painting that I started back in March of 2009. I began this painting during my stay at the Vermont Studio Center. Unfortunately, 10 days into the residency, I contracted a case of mono, and spent the remainder of my stay in Vermont sleeping and unsuccessfully attempting to swallow. (This may or may not have been related to the jogs taken in 20-degree weather for the first few days at the residency).

Upon recovery, I stashed the painting in my basement, to be worked on as soon I stopped inadvertently associating illness with working on the beast. I finally overcame my unfortunate classical conditioning, and here is the result:

Kate gets mail, learns to make an animated GIF

At long last, I have received a copy of Empty Magazine. I am blown away by the work of the artists featured inside, and feel privelaged to be shown alongside them. Empty is seemingly only interested in printing artwork that is exactly my taste.

Ever since I saw it on my friend Morgan Blair's blog, I've dreamed of creating an animated GIF featuring my favorite pages of a classy art magazine with my work in it. Now, thanks to Empty Magazine and GIF instructions on Yahoo! answers, I finally have.

In recent affairs, I have finished two new paintings, but due to the Christmas-presentness of their nature, I am forced to postpone their posting until after the holidays. That being said, I have yet to begin Christmas shopping, and apologize in advance to anyone who receives a gift from me this year, as I assure you it is going to be purchased with much love, but also with much haste and last-minute panic.

Also, if Santa is reading this, I would really like an ice-cream maker for Christmas so that I could stop spending $8 on tart frozen yogurts from Berry Chill every time I go to Chicago.

Empty Update- Design is Kinky

Issue 17 of Empty Magazine, much to my delight, is already available to purchase through Empty's website. You can order a copy here, or just find your way there through Empty's home page. The cover artist is Sophie Jodoin, and the issue features artwork from many other artists, including myself.

Design is Kinky was also kind enough to post a link to my site on their web page. Be sure to check out my link as well as links to other radical contemporary artists on their site.

Empty Magazine, Issue 17

Some of my artwork is featured in Empty Magazine, Issue 17, which was just released for December.

Empty is an Australian art and Design magazine based out of Sydney and it is produced by the people from Design is Kinky. I have not seen Issue 17 for myself, but the editor assured me that my work is indeed in there somewhere.

Empty is not typically distributed to the States, but you can order subscriptions or back issues from the website at http://www.emptymag.com/. As I, Kate Pfeiffer, am incredibly fond of work by Kate Pfeiffer, I highly recommend ordering some back issues of 17 once it becomes available. Or, if you live in Australia, just run over to a specialized book store or news stand and pick one up.

Gallery Night Show at Caggio
